Working internationally on gender identity, gender expression and bodily issues

Trans* issues in the international HIV response

We are a key stakeholder in HIV activism. Our HIV/AIDS-related advocacy has focused on contributing to expanding trans participation in international HIV activism, as well as the inclusion of gender identity, gender expression and bodily diversity issues in the work of donors, official agencies and institutions, and international organizations working on HIV.

We actively participated in the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on ending AIDS (New York, June 2016). Our intervention at the HLM, where former co-director Masen Davis served as an official member of the US delegation, was instrumental in Ambassador Deborah Birx’s announcement of the Key Populations Investment Fund launched by The United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

We have partnerships with other organizations and networks representing key affected populations, including International Network of People Who Use Drugs (INPUD), Global Network of People Living With HIV (GNP+), Men Who Have Sex With Men Global Forum (MSMGF) and Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP). We will use these partnerships to forge commitments and strategies to increase HIV funding and services for transgender people and increase trans* participation in international HIV activism.

We support trans* international organizing on HIV through our participation as a member of the International Reference Group on Transgender Women and HIV/AIDS (IRGT), served on the ViiV Evaluation Panel 2016, and contributed to expanding the number of trans* participants in meetings, conference calls and webinars on HIV.

Support the inclusion of neglected communities, as it relates to HIV, in decision-making processes that affect them.
